The costs, emotional and physical, of not nurturing our living space are high. We can pay dearly for tolerating the un-inspired and worn out parts of our homes, the lost keys, the missing mail, etc., and the lost time it takes to live this way. We are intimately connected with the space we live in, and we reflect its beauty and flaws when we walk out the door.
Change, and all the thrills and spills that go with it, is the elephant in the room that must be dealt with during and after the organizing or decorating process. There are definitely times when it's right to make the big dramatic changes, but the most powerful, long lasting and ultimately dramatic change happens with small, even tiny, steps. An organized room should not appear to be perfect. It is far better to create a space that is easy to manage and allows change.
Speaking with hundreds of people about their challenges with organizing or decorating, and having worked with close to 200 individuals and families, I have developed an approach that is fundamentally practical as well as intuitive and nurturing. This "right brain/left brain" approach seems to work well with most clients allowing them to reap the rewards of a more enjoyable life.
There is a Japanese word/philosophy called Kaizen. It simply means taking small comfortable steps towards improvement. People tend to have more energy and become more relaxed working this way. In the initial plan and throughout the process, whether it is simply for one or for several sessions, I adapt and "tweak" all of these aspects with each person.
